Referring to my previous post "Continual error message"

After scanning my computer with Ad-Aware & Spybot for malware/spyware and
running System File Checker, I am no further ahead. I still receive "Windows
explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience." The error signature ---AppName: explorer AppVer:
6.0.2900.2180 ModName: atl.dll ModVer: 3.5.2284.0 Offset: 00002e26
when clicking on desktop icons or program files.
What can I possibly do now short of reinstalling Windows XP because I
wouldn't know where to begin. Thanks...

Few people are willing to rummage for your previous message. Please learn
how to thread your posts.

If you are unable to remove malware from your computer you will have to do a
clean install. That means erasing your hard disk and starting from scratch.

Hi,
[Original post on Mar 11]

See if a legitimate program is causing this.

First, use ShellExView v1.10 - Shell Extensions Manager:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html to disable context menu items.
One of them may be the culprit.

Next, does the problem still occur if you startup in Safe Mode?
315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222
If the problem goes away, a program that doesn't load in Safe Mode is
causing the problem. Disable unnecessary startup items from Start> Run>
msconfig> Startup. See if you can find the guilty party.

Some malware must be removed manually. Start at
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm work through the preliminary cleaning
steps. Read the important message at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=4075 then post a HijackThis log to
the forum at http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

Be patient. It's a busy forum at times.

Hope this helps,
Don

Please excuse me! I did receive a reply to my original "continual error
message" and answered that March 14th. I didn't see an answer to that so I
subsequently started with a new "thread", hoping for a reply this time.

The reason you are having problems posting is that you are using the
awful web interface to these newsgroups. Instead, use a newsreader.
This will help you keep to a thread, because as Mr. Zieglar said very
few people are going to bother hunting down a post as old as one from
March 14th. If you had just posted to the same thread, those of us
using newsreaders (and nearly all the regular helpers in the MS
newsgroups use real newsreaders) would have seen the whole thread with
all the previous posts and been able to analyze the situation and
possibly give you the help you want.

Here is information to help you with the newsreader:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are
some links to information about newsgroups:
