Referencing/linked changes in a document

I am relatively new to using Microsoft Word and I want to know if there is a
function which for when I make a chage to a specific word or title in a
document that anywhere else that particular word or title is written in the
document will change aswell.

Can anyone help me with this? Either by telling me what this is called so I
can look it up in the help function or by giving me tips on how this can be
done.

The obvious choice is Find & Replace but depending on what kind of
"change" you're talking about it may not be the most efficient method. It
depends to a great extent on whether you mean change to the text, change to
the formatting, change to the location... or some combination as well as
what the nature of the document.

More details will probably yield more suggestions - And don't neglect to
mention what version of Word you're using.

Thanks. I am using Word 2007.

As a scenario example, a budget report. I have a cost field which is blank
on my title page and I have a table on my third page where I have a total
which is constantly changing. What can I do so that everytime the total
changes on page 3 in the table the total automatically alters on the first
page to reflect that change.

When juggling with financial data like budgets, the usual source data
come from Excel (or any spreadsheet). My first choice would be to link
the data you want to display from that Excel file in Word, and linking
these fields to the source data (Copy/Paste Special/Paste as link) so
any change in Excel is reflected in the Word file automatically. The
disadvantage is that the Word file can quickly grow to xx MBs, although
in 2007 it might be more efficiently handled (I hv still 2003). HTH,
