Referencing figures and tables to chapters

I am doing my dissertation and want to reference my figures and tables to the
chapter.
i.e if the chapter is 1 and the figure is the second within that chapter i
would like it to show automatically
Figure 1.2
If it was the third chapter and the first figure.
Figure 3.1
If it was the third chapter and the sixth figure
Figure 3.6
The same approach with tables.

Hope this is clear enough. who can help please....

Insert | Reference | Caption. In the Caption dialog, click Numbering... and
check the box for "Include chapter number." The "chapter number" must be the
number of an autonumbered paragraph in one of Word's built-in heading
styles.

I am struggling with this too... I don't find a "built-in heading style" that
has autonumbered paragraphs... am I overlooking it?

You must have modified a built-in heading style to include auto numbering
(which is linked to that style).
