Reference Letter

Hi

We have a letter we send out to chase up a reference for a new employee. As
it stands at present, the name of the referee not only appears in the
addressee area but then recurs at other points in the letter. The same is
true of the new employees name.

Is there any way of getting the document to pull the name of the referee
from its first appearance in the document to various other points and
likewise the name of the new employee?

I know that we could use Mail merge, but I wondered if there was any other
way?
