I suggest moving documents elsewhere

Open a My Computer Window on a different drive (if there are several
users, make an individual folder each and do this when logged in to each
in urn, opening his/her personal folder there)

Open another on C:\Documents and Settings\<current user> to show the My
Documents folder. With the *right* mouse button down, drag it across,
taking *Move* here. Same for any other 'My' folders that are not
sub-folders of My Documents

In Outlook Express, take Tools - Options - Maintenance, click Store
Folder and move that too.

In Internet Options, middle of front page, click Settings for Temporary
Internet files and move that. While about it cut down the space allowed
- 50 MB should be more than enough

In Control Panel - System - System restore, highlight drive C and click
Settings; reduce the space allowed, which in a large drive is at 12%
often excessive. 200 is minimum; I'd suggest 500 or so. Also on drives
used purely for data there is no point in having it enabled at all; in
their settings check the Disable box

If you have installed a Service Pack and do not intend to uninstall it,
you can delete the hidden windows\$NTUNinstallServicePack folder

And one other - if you do not used Shut down and Hibernate, go to
Control Panel - Power Options - Hibernate and uncheck the Enable box;
that will delete the hiberfil.sys which is the size of your RAM

Next time install XP to a hard drive that is an appropriate size.

It is not only small but probably runs on PIO mode 3 (11 MBs).
By switching to a 40 GB ATA100 disk with an 8 MB buffer (which is about as
small and cheap as they get),

then

1. Your MOBO could use 8GB partitions min with possable 32 GB.

2. The disk would run at PIO mode 4 min at 16 MBs.
If it understands DMA then 16 or 22 with reduced CPU usage. With a little
luck, the base UDMA33 would give a whooping 200% increase in disk speed.

3. If the PCI using DMA and a bus master that could stuff memory, more CPU
savings.

For $59 you would basically have a new computer that runs twice as fast.
