Reducing page file size for faster loading.

I am using the same color background .jpg photo on all of the sites pages. I've reduced the resolution to 72 dpi. There really isn't that much more on the pages except text. I have the photo size set to 800X600 pixels to fill the screen but the pages load very slow. If I convert the photo to .gif the file is larger. What can I do to make the files smaller and load faster? It's even noticably slow with an internet cable connection.

Can you post a URL so we can see it?

If it's a single. solid color, you can make the size very small, even 1px by
1px and it will fill up the entire background. If you need the entire 800 X
600 photo then you can open it in a photo editor like photoshop elements and
set the optimization setting very low. Since it is a background, you should
not need fine detail, and setting the optimization setting very low will
make the file much smaller.
