Reducing 2003 Large Archive File

I have an 8.6GB archive file from Outlook 2003. I am attempting to reduce
the size to copy it to a new computer and improve its performance when
searching for old emails. Can I archive an archive? The emails cover a
period of 15 months, so I am interested in keeping them in as few files
(prefereably one) for serching purposes. Ideas?
 
You can try to compact it (from inside Outlook), but compacting only
works if data has been deleted previously. As long as you keep all
archived data, there is no way of reducing the PST file size.
