Redirect Favorites to a network drive

I would like to set my users up to have their favorites folder in their user
directory instead of c:\documents and settings\user\favorites. I was able to
accomplish this in windows 98 by replacing their favorites folder on the c:
drive with a shortcut to the users network drive (h:\favorites). In XP, you
can do this for your My Documents folder, but not favorites. Is there a
registry hack for this, or some other way of making it possible?

Thanks!

I haven't tried this in XP but it worked in Win98 to set favorites on
a network drive:
Export the keys first for safety.

You can change the value of Favorites in the Registry in these
two keys: (ignore the second if the value is not there)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

No, I don't want.
You are replying to me instead of the OP for some reason.
While I am using a newsreader and can see your attachment, the OP is
using the CDO web interface and will not see any attachments.

Thank you both for your ideas. If you want to email me the zip file, my
email address is (e-mail address removed).

Thanks again!

Alan,

When made this change in regedit (in XP), as soon as I close out and go back
into regedit, the changes I made are not there. It reverts back to default
(c:\docs and settings\user\favorites). I'll try de Graff's zip file when I
recieve it and I'll let you both know if it works.

Thanks!

Odd?
Perhaps you have another similar entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE?
The only other cause I know of that happening is an incorrect entry
but I will do a bit of research if necessary after you get the zip as
I am sure there are other causes.

Just in case de Graff doesn't send it to you, I will send it now.
It looks like you will have to do a bit of editing of the files.

Hi Alan,

The OP has to modify the "User Shell Folders" value actually.

To techiegirl:

See paragraph "The Favorites Shell Folders path reverts back ?" in this page
for additional checkpoints:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/iefaq.htm

"Shell Folders" is obsolete, and it's available because of backward
compability. Note that older programs still use this registry key. Finest
example would be MSINFO32.

Hi Ramesh

Thanks. Sometimes I feel like Shell Folders myself.
The blog is interesting reading.

No problem, Alan.

LOL!

I always felt like "User Shell Folders" myself, and that's the reason I
could not find a fix for the MSINFO32 problem documented here:
(http://windowsxp.mvps.org/msinfofix.htm.) The moment when I felt like
"Shell Folders", I could find the fix, and could write a script for that
easily. :-)
