Cannot save IE6 Favorites on network drive

As part of our standard build we change the registry to save IE
Favorites to the users personal drive, in our case "H:\.":

; These set each users' default save locations, H:\Favorites and H:\My
Documents.

Although it hasn't happened in a while, today users began getting
error messages when they tried to save a new Favorite. The error
message states something about "a process is in use." Also, it saves
two (2) non-functioning entries in the Favorites folder.

We've recieved some calls today and can reproduce the glitch on our
end. I just cannot imagine what has changed to cause the problem.
All other network drive activety is correct and the registry settings
on effected machines looks correct.

Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting? We are a Novell shop if
that might ring a bell or two.

I would try toggling the setting in IE, options, advanced, on and off for
"Enable Personalized Favorites" Some security update has probably hit the

(unchecked) normally but I tried toggling and restarting IE without
luck. Creating a short .reg key I could re-enter the settings and
might get a couple of Favorites to save and then back to the initial
problem. Re-entering the settings don't bring consistent results.

I'm lost as I've turned off every Service and Process I think I can
get away with. Since the Favorites will save to the default Microsoft
location it appears IE is working fine. Anyone out there have any
idea if there could be some network problem or setting tweaked that
could cause this behavior? I was hoping it would be McAfee...nope.

Process. It has to be something like an antispy app. Do you use Defender?

Using IE6 now as I work at getting a corp. version of IE7 ready so no
Phishing Filter. We are not using Defender. We are using McAfee 8.0i
and have two of the Unwanted Programs Policies set: Spyware & Adware.
This activety takes place at the workstation end with none of this
type of software running on the servers.

I did disable On Access Scanning, where these run, without success. I
shutdown the McAfee Framework Service also although I know it is
really used with the ePO portion of McAfee's Corporate Solution.

The package currently in place looks for only two-hundred malware type
threats and the list could change with each new DAT. I don't want to
just throw away the idea but I thought turning the programs off and re-
opening IE would give me a clean slate.

I might try sending the Favorites to a public folder to see if the
problem lies with permissions for a specific H:\ drive location.
Again, what bothers me is the problem happened about a quarter a go
and went away on its own. McAfee has been in place longer than that.
Wouldn't the spyware piece also effect favorites saved to a default,
local drive location?

Possibly the H: drive needs to add system Permissions. What is baffling, of
course, is the sudden fail LAN wide. I'm out of ideas too. I hope you get
