redflag with Spybot

john

On my spybot run this morning I got a red entry as follows.

Windows Security Center.AntiVirusOverride: Settings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security
Center\AntiVirusOverride!=dword:0

Haven't done anything with it yet. Wondering if one of you folks can tell me
what it means.
My MS antispyware just previous was clean. my MS patches are all up todate

Are you using McAfee anti-virus? The McAfee security center
sets the DWORD to turn MS security center off, making McAfee
the default. But this is not a problem, just a bug. You
can have SpyBot fix the problem and you'll get a warning
about running both security centers [I have not seen any
problem on my machine.]

Might you have turned off the Security Center notification about antivirus
not being up to date, perhaps because the older version of AVG didn't have
this interface? The current AVG does, and you can turn that back on and it
is helpful.

Security Center, and on the left "change the way Security Center alerts me.

Check that all three are checked.

Spybot is simply reporting that the registry settings are
different from the expected defaults (which it has in its
database), which would be to set the security center
alerts on. The !=dword:0 part of the line means that the
data for the dword (e.g. DisableUpdateNotify) is not 0,
as it would be if the alert were enabled thats the ! part.

If you've changed the settings yourself or as a result of
using Mcafee or Symantec( It's possible AVG also changes
this setting if you are seeing this ) you can safely tell
Spybot to exclude those detections from further scans. In
order to do this right click on each in turn, then
click "exclude this detection from future searches".

The way to re-enable these settings and take away the
detection is goto start menu then to control panel and to
Security Centre . On the left you will see "Change the
way security centre alerts me" click this and then you
can place checks back in the Virus Protection or Firewall
area's which ever is being flagged in the scan and then
press ok but if its your Antivirus that has changed them
they will change back when you reboot

Hope this helps

Andy

Gentlemen,
That was the problem ,
Thank you
The other day security center kept telling me AV was out of date , since it
updates daily. I knew that wasn't it so. Finnaly I just did the I'll do it
myself check mark in the security center.
My biggest problem was that I didn't know what SpyBot was trying to tell
me. I'm an old man (77) and self taught . Lots of this stuff blows my mind.
I was afraid to do any thing till I Knew what it was I was fooling with.
Had SpyBot Fix. Reran Spybot and all OK

Glad it was easy!

If you are running AVG version 6, you should upgrade to AVG version 7.

It is still free for individuals, and easy to do.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Just click on Get AVG Free in the left column and download the file. It
will upgrade the version you have.
