Red Xs

Since installing new PC running XP SP2 and IE6 some WEB sites do not display
pictures just placeholders with RED Xs.
Also Hover Buttons created with Frontpage 2000 display as small boxes with
the RED X and they cannot be used.

The majority of sites are OK and some that don't display hover buttons
display graphics Ok on same page and vica versa.

I try the sites on other machines running IE6 (W2K and ME) and they are fine.

Any ideas please>

May not be much help, but I've recently begun to have the same problem. I've
been using IE 6.0 for quite some time, but only noticed the Red X problem in
the last few weeks. I think the files that I can't see are png files. It
seemed to start after I loaded Adobe Acrobat 6.0, but I'm not sure of that.
I've asked several people if they know of an ALLOWPNG flag somewhere in IE,
but no one seems to know.

Thanks,

I'm running Adobe Reader 6.0 on both machines XP and ME. ME displays OK, XP
doesn't

Hi GT :)

A few suggestions you might try:

Pictures Are Not Displayed on Web Sites in Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283807

Click on the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Multimedia section and make sure the box "Show Pictures"
is ticked.

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]
Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium"
"Mobile Code Control" = Off
2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"
Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption
Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.
5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.
6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

Hi

The red X's indicate that an image can't be downloaded or displayed. You
might try clearing your history, temporary internet files and cookies
(General tab of Tools -> Internet Options) and then refreshing the page with
Shift+Refresh. The site may also be cached badly at your ISP and you just
need to wait a day or two.

Hover buttons are Java applets.

Hi Jan,
Could my IE6 encoding selection problem be related? Symptoms: red X's, button not working,
links not reacting, wrong chharacters
My encoding goes wrong persistently, regardless whether auto selection is is ticked or not.
Repaired & reinstalled IE6 SP1, W 98SE
Cleared cache, swept spyware, reloaded languages in Advanced,
All that helps for about one hour is delete entire Content Directory from Temp Internet Files
& restart.
Also, auto complete is very sticky, taking 10-20 secs or so.
Are they related problems?
Corrupted files, if so, which?

My laptop w same software components runs fine.
Any clues?

I am not that familiar with W98SE, but, here is a site that may give you more information on image problems, and might provide more help:
