Most of the time, images in e-mail aren't really IN the e-mail itself.
The e-mail just contains HTML references to images stored on a web site
somewhere. Most e-mail software, even non-Microsoft software, use
Internet Explorer to display the HTML formatted e-mail. So, just like
when Internet Explorer can't find the image that is referenced in the
HTML code, it displays a red x to indicate that it can't get the image
file off of the web server where it is really stored.

This usually happens to people who have dial up internet service. They
download their e-mail then go off-line. Later, when they try to read
their e-mail IE can't get the pictures because they are off-line. If you
are still on-line when you read the e-mail then IE will be able to get
the pictures and display them for you. Also, if you read, or just
preview, an e-mail while you are on-line, then go off-line and try to
read the e-mail again, it will often be able to display the pictures
because they were stored in IE's cache (Temporary Internet Files folder)
when it was first read.

Hope this helps explain things for you.
