Red "X" on Desktop

On my Desktop, in the uper left corner, I suddenly have a
white box with a RED "X" in it that is not an icon that
can be selected. Any idea as to what it is and how to get
rid of it?

I bet it's a non-functioning web desktop item. Try going into your
desktop properties: right click on your desktop, choose the Desktop
tab, click Customize Desktop and choose the Web tab. See if there's
anything in the Web Pages box and uncheck or delete any items you
don't want and click OK and then OK again and see if that removes it.
