red x in powerpoint pics

I get a red 'X' over some of the photos I've inserted into a powerpoint 03
program. Is the problem that some may have been tiffs instead of jpegs or are
they corrupt files or something else? Is there a quick way of salvaging this
situation? Thanks!!!
