Red Line in Document

I was typing on a document and suddenly a red vertical line appeared down the
left side of all pages. It goes through the words of the document. How can
I get rid of this line? I don't even know where it came from.

That sounds like a Track Changes indicator, and line color is set to red
(normally, it's set to Auto, and generally is black). Is TRK showing on the
status bar?

Double-click the TRK to turn tracking off (single-click if this is Word
2007). Click the Accept Changes dropdown arrow in the Reviewing toolbar, and
choose Accept all changes. (In Word 2007, the Accept button is in the Review
ribbon tab).

Are you seeing the line in other programs, or just in Word? In all
documents, or just in that document?

If it's not TRK changes indicators, then my next guess would be a problem
with the display driver and some odd interaction with Word--unless the
problem occurs on another computer, as well. If the problem persists after
rebooting, or shows up when you view that document on another computer, then
I'd have to see it to try to diagnose what it is. If you'd care to email it
to me (if the contents aren't sensitive/proprietary), I'd be happy to take a
look... I love a good mystery. If so... please send to herb at herbtyson dot
com (my attempt to avoid automatic address harversters).

No TRK anywhere. I don't think that is the problem. Any other thoughts?

It appears to be only that document. I might send it to you. It may be the
formatting the company does. It's a job application.

Hi, Sandy,

The red line is a graphic line that was drawn there in the Header/Footer
layer. Choose View – Header and Footer (I’m assuming you’re using Word 2003
or earlier). Once viewing the Header/Footer “layerâ€, you can now click on
the line to select it, then tap the Delete or Backspace key… and Poof! I
sent you the file with the line zapped.

The mystery, of course, is “How did it get there?†Such things don’t happen
by accident. You indicated that you were typing, and the red vertical line
appeared. I’m wondering if perhaps it was there, but you hadn’t previously
noticed it. But, the question for you would be “Who put it there, and why?â€.
I guess, if you delete it, someone will notice it’s missing and complain…
and then you’ll have the answer. Maybe you should change it to a green line
to get their attention! ;-)

Cheers,
