Recycle Bin will not empty

I have a problem. There are two files in my recycle bin that I cannot remove.
Both have an “ai†extension for Adobe Illustrator. Both come up with the
following “Error Deleting File or Folder†message:
“Cannot delete Dg39; It is being used by another person or program. Close
any programs that might be using the file and try again.†The only difference
between the two error messages for each file is that one says Dg39, and the
other says Dg4. I have tried everything that I can think of. I’ve booted up
in Safe Mode, I’ve tried a clean boot using MSCONFIG, both with no success. I
get the same error messages if I choose to Restore the files.
I am using Windows XP SP2, Norton Firewall & Antivirus. I have checked the
files with NAV & they are clean.

Is the file a protected file because nav has a tendency to make the recycle
bin a protected recycle bin try shutting off nav and then deleting the file.

The file is not protected. I have never had a problem with NAV before. I've
been using it for years, and especially on this computer which I've had for
over 2 years. I did try your suggestion though, with no success.

You might want to uninstall Adobe Illustrator and then try to clean the
recycle bin before re-installing it.
You might also want to search the Registry for those file names in recycle
but, don't forget to "Export" the whole key to a .reg file just in case you
have to restore what you deleted from the registry.
When you Export a section of the registry, it's best if the exported file be
given a distictive name and placed in a "Registry Files" folder for easy
finding. Restoring .reg files is easy. You just double-click it and it will
come up with a message for you to confirm the action.
If you want to look into a .reg file, you must "Edit" it (use the system
Editor) from the right-click context (drop-down) menu.

Already tried that. The file names do not exist in the registry, and already
tried uninstalling Illustrator. No success there either.

what happened when you tried to uninstall it, and from where did you try?
Did you try the cd?
Does the program have an uninstall option, is the program listed in
Add/Remove programs?
See if it's in your startup folder in msconfig. If it is, un-tick it,
restart your computer in safe mode, and try to uninstall it from there.
I don't know what version you have, but here is a link that might help.

Also, you can try running a disk cleanup, which will empty, hopefully, your
recycle bin.

I wouldn't try the registry yet, the reason being..and I could be very wrong
about this, but, I have found that when faced with a similar problem, I used
RegSeeker to remove programs files, but then had trouble deleting shortcuts,
etc, because the file/path could not be found. It's best to try to first
remove the program by other means, then use the reg cleaner to cleanup
vagrant, leftover files.

What I meant was that I did uninstall Illustrator & tried to then clear the
recycle bin. Sorry that I did not make that clear. I assumed that one would
understand that. No problems with uninstall. Problem still exists with
clearing the recyle bin.

Try this:
Right-click the recycle bin.
Click 'Properties'.
Make sure 'Use one setting for all drives:' is selected.
Check the box 'Do not move files to the Recycle Bin'.
Click 'OK'.
That will completely disable the recycle bin.
Reboot, then re-enable the recycle bin.

I completely forgot about trying this one. Partial success. Was able to get
rid of one of them. The one that gives the error message with Dg4 in it.
Still get the same error message for the one with Dg39 in the error message.

If I remember right (and that is questionable), I seem to remember that
there was a way of removing the recycle bin entirely and when rebooting,
Windows would recreate it. Did I just dream this or is there a way to do it?

Yeah! The last file is gone. I don't know whether the "moveonboot" did it or
not, but it still did show up in my recycle bin when I rebooted. But, I was
able to clear the recycle bin when I did.
I chose to "moveonboot" the file from one of the hidden folders within the
recycler folder with no error messages from moveonboot. So maybe that enabled
me to clean it out when I rebooted. Much thanks to all on solving this
problem.

I was not able to insert the file name or type in the file name on the
"moveonboot". In fact the file names in the recycle bin does not have
extensions.

Their gone! Out of frustration after messing around with trying to get the
file name into the "moveonboot", I shut the computer down and called it quits
for the day. However, beforre downloading "moveonboot", I had disabled the
recycle, did a restart and still could not clear the bin. Three hours later,
I booted back up and recycle. I then used properties on each file, clicked
"cut", then clicked "delete", and it worked. I didn't try anything else
since whatever I did worked. I don't know the reasons, but glad their gone.

My thanks to all the ideas from this group.
