Recycle Bin Error

Greetings

I am using a laptop with XP + SP2. A few days ago, I was emptying my Recycle
Bin when the following message popped up:

"Error Deleting File or Folder. Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the
source file or disk."

When selecting "Empty Recycle Bin" the message appeared, I clicked it off
and then most if not all files disappeared. A remainig file was deleted by me
manually. But the "Empty Recycle Bin" link was still visisble. This
disappears when the Bin is really empty. When selected again, the same error
message came up, even though no file or folder remained visible.

I used System Restore, and the error message ceased for a few hours, now it
has come back again.

I would be most grateful if someone can direct me to a remedy for this fault.

Run the disk cleanup portion in the Start/Programs/Accessories/System
Tools section.........If you never used this area before be careful &
uncheck the "downloaded program files" section.......At least I do.

I have a problem that is almost the inverse of this. I copied the pictures
from my camera to a folder in "My Pictures" then erased the pictures from
the camera. Either during or right after that, something went bonkers, and
XP Pro SP2 started wanting to delete them over and over again. As I was
trying to get folders closed and get control of the situation, it started
wanting to send "My Pictures" to the recycle bin...over and over again. In
the confusion of that process, I inadvertently clicked on Yes once. I
didn't worry too much about that, because it was sending the folder to the
"safety net", right?

Well, to make a long story short, when I got some semblance of control and
opened up the Recycle Bin, there was nothing there (but the option to Empty
the Recycle Bin is still available). It was one of those moments when you
develop a real passion for all things Microsoft. I have a backup of what
was previously in "My Pictures", but what I had copied from my camera now
seems to be somewhere in Microsoft Hell.

Will the disk cleanup tool help my situation? Or maybe I should ask where
things go when XP asks about sending something to the Recycle Bin and when
you give it permission, you find out it lied to you.

Incidentally, I restarted to see if that would make everything all better,
and after it had set for a spell (after having booted back up), it was
wanting to send a folder on my desktop to the Recycle Bin. That was last
night, and it hasn't done that since.

Sheesh! Ya gotta love Windows!

When I open the Recycle Bin, it shows nothing. When I started Disk Cleanup
and it showed how much space I would save, it shows 99mb in the Recycle Bin.
Which part of this psychotic OS should I believe? ;-)

Only reason I suggest using the disk cleanup because it seems to bypass
that warning you recieve & *actually* does clean the recycle bin un-
highlighting the option in right clicking it......I've seen this dozens
of times where right clicking the recycle bin has the empty option
available & nothing appears in the bin(or the error you have
gotten)......It's a quirky thing that happens sometimes & I never bother
to figger out why or stress about it......
Running the disk cleanup portion solves it until it may happen again in
the future(or may not)......Let it dump it out it's really not going to
hurt anything, and personally I would believe the disk cleanup portion
more..... ;0)

Thank you for your help. I started the disk clean up process, and found that
there is zero in my Recycle Bin. Then I considered that I was not sure I
really wanted to dump all temporary files or temporary internet files. Some
of these may relate to attachments on filed emails that involve business
affiars. So in the end, I have done nothing.

After 16 years using computers, I was crtainly not stressing. I was simply
not sure if what was happening might not be a symptom of something worse.

I feel very sorry for Dave. It is awful to lose photographs for no good
reason. I myself never erase photos on the camera until I am satisfied that
everything is properly downloaded. I also have my 250 GB external drive
switched on to enable me to back up the photos as soon as they are on the
computer.

Okay fair enough.......I have found that even though running disk
cleanup & there is zero in the recycle bin I click OK to clean it and it
restores the desktop recyle bin back to normal with the option to empty
no longer bold.........I suppose you know you can uncheck all the other
options.

I was actually responding to Dave Dawson in that reply not you. And the
reference to stressing was implied to me not anyone in particular or
generalized.........*I* don't stress about it....... ;0)

Well worrying about backups or failures is never a worry of mine with
over 8 TB's of space to play around with........ ;0)

But in this case, I want it to _come back_. Didn't want it to go away
in the first place. My problem is that nothing shows up in the Recycle
Bin window, even though I believe it really is there somewhere. I have
tried Start/Run "c:\Recycler", with the same results...nada.

I have also tried Search, and couldn't locate it. While Windows was
more confused than normal, it must have neglected to tuck it into the
Recycle Bin nice and neatly.

Can anybody give me a clue as to how to locate the lost pics?
