recovery of user data

Hi all

I completely lost my Windows 2000 professional installation. None of
the Repair methods worked.

I would like to recover my prsonal data (Documentes and settings) by
making a second instalaltion of windows on the same drive but in a
different folder and then access the Documents and settings folder
form the previous installation.

Cna I do this or will the second installation overwrite the content of
documents and settings?

thanks!

It would be easier to recover your data if you had a separate PC (w/ Win2k) to hook this drive up to temporarily. If you don't, you could re-install Win2k, but you don't need to wory about using a different folder, and there isn't much in the Winnt (or Windows) folder that relates to your profile. You profile is in the *:\Documents and Settings\ subfolder structure, and that won't change based on where you install Windows to. If really must re-install, do so, but don't create an account for yourself right away. (Of course, if you were using the Administrator account as your own, then you have a problem, in that you can't avoid it being named the same.)
