Recovery of original word doc 2003

I recently created two word docs in word 2003. One I saved, the other I saved
before I could rename the file thus overwriting the original. Can I recover
the original or will I have to re-create it?
 
You'll have to recreate it unless --

1) you still have the document open, in which case press Undo repeatedly; or

2) you have 'Always create backup copy' checked (under Tools > Options >
Save): in which case the folder containing the document will also contain a
file called 'Backup of ....' This will be the file as it was when you last
opened it.
