Recovery of deleted back-up file

During recovery of Windows XP, I have placed back-up file in an external
harddisk (D:). During recovery I have deleted the partition on the C: , but
apparently my back-up file was deleted, because when re-install the back-up
file from D:, the message appeared, that the D: was not formatted. I dare not
format it, if it would make it impossible to recover the back-up file.

But what to do? Please help.

Yours Nikolaj

I'm sorry, but that simply isn't true.
There are various recovery programs you can try. I use Ontrack Easy
Recovery Pro, but it is quite expensive. You might want to take the
drive to a local professional who will probably have similar software.
Otherwise, here are some other possibilities:

PCInspector File Recovery

Ontrack's EasyRecovery

Of course, there is always a professional data recovery company. I
highly recommend DriveSavers, although their services are not
inexpensive. Only you can decide on the worth of your data:

Dear Malke: Thank you for a comprehensive reply with many suggestions. I hope
that my problem will be solved by one of your methods. I am at present
inclined to try a profesional recovery firm rather than buying programs.

Yours sincerely

His answer is completely wrong. Don't rely on it.

"Deleting" a file doesn't actually delete it; it just marks the
space as available to be used. There are third-party programs
that can sometimes recover deleted files. The problem is that the
space used by the file is likely to become overwritten very
quickly, and this makes the file unrecoverable.

So your chances of successfully recovering this file are decent
if you try recovering it immediately after deleting it, and
rapidly go downhill from there. If you've been using the computer
since then (for example to write this question and read this
answer), your chances are probably very poor by now.

But if the file is important enough, it's worth a try anyway.
Stop using the computer in question immediately, if you haven't
done so already. Download an undelete program (here's one:
http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html but there are
several others to choose from; do a Google search) on a friend's
computer and bring it yours on a floppy to try.

If this fails, your only other recourse is to take the drive to a
professional file recovery company. This kind of service is very
expensive and may or may not work in your case.

Stop pretending to know what you don't. You ARE NOT a computer geek. A
computer user wannabe - maybe!

Dear Ken Blake:

Thank you for your advice. It gives me hope. Since the files are on an
extern harddisk, which I have disconnected f rom the main harddisk, the
fiels, or what is left should remain unchanged.

I shall probably bring the extern harddisk to a firm specialising in
recovery in such cases, there are several here in Copenhagen, Denmark

You're welcome. Glad to help.

Then your chances of recovering the data are probably excellent.

Hello,

EASEUS DataRecoveryWizard utility can help. Speaking about me, it was
easily able to restore deleted, lost file and unformat drive,
so I think you will also find it quite useful. Really recommended
tool, give it a try.
