recovery disks

can I use the recovery disks that came with my computer to repair my operating system(xp home) without doing a reinstall and without losing data? If so how? thankx for any advice.
 
It depends on the manufacturer and the type of disks they shipped.

the disks are made by Sony Vaio. I have 3 system recovery disks as well as 3 applications disks which contain various sony software and such.
