Recovery Console will not accept my Administrator password

Whether I run RC from my hard disk or from my XP Home CD, it does not
recognize my Administrator password (which *is* recognized when I boot into
SafeMode).

I've deleted the password, rebooted, then tried again with a null entry, but
it won't recognize that either.

When I originally installed the RC to my hard drive some time ago, before I
had ever created an Admin password, it loaded up fine.

How do I fix this?

Hi Bruce,

A common problem with preinstalled machines, see:

Hi Bruiser;
Don't get offended by "shorties".
This is one query that mostly gets "references" to Microsoft articles from
all the cautious helpers in here.

Hi Rick,

Yes, after I posted, I dug a little deeper and found the KB article you
mention. On one hand I'm glad to know what the reason is behind this (I was
going nuts trying to figure out why I could boot into the Administrator
account in SafeMode, but the same password wouldn't be accepted by RC).

Before I started going password crazy (don't ask...), I do remember being
able to load up the RC fine, because I was curious to see how it ran after
installing it to my hard drive. So I don't understand the OEM part of it and
why it wouldn't have given me trouble right off the bat. At any rate, I've
contacted the manufacturer of my system and I'm waiting to hear.

Don't suppose there is any online source that can supply these two files
that need to be updated. For the life of me, I don't understand why MS can't
just make a patch available.

Thanks,
Bruce

No, there isn't a public source. This is because patches like these are not
always fully tested, and they are considered supported patches. They are
only released to those who have a proven need for the patch.

Thanks for the link, Michael, but I resolved the problem. It was suggested
to me to re-install the RC, but from a slipstreamed XP/SP1 setup disk, which
would install the updated version (SP1, which I do have installed, was
supposed to address this problem -- why it didn't in my case, I'm not sure).

If I had seen your reply earlier, I would have tried it for sure. But at
least I learned how to make a slipstreamed copy of my setup disk, so that's
cool. Of course, the irony is that I spent a couple of hours solving the RC
problem with the hope that I'll never have to use it!

And thanks for the feedback, it helps so much when the original poster [OP];

You're welcome, Michael. BTW, I've been corresponding with a tech from the
company that built my computer (ABS), originally hoping he would have sort
of hotfix or other support for this problem. He didn't, but was intrigued
with how I finally fixed the problem. I sent him some links, one of which
was yours. I hope that was OK.
