Recovery console, administrator

C

Conner Stevens

I am afraid I already know the answer, but is there any way to boot using
recovery console without having the administrator password? I have
administrator privileges with my login, but not the actual admin password. I
will have to wait way too long if I have to go through our tech support..

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

No, you need the password to use the Recovery Console. What are you hoping
to fix from the Recovery Console?

Then why don't you, using your login's administrative privileges,
simply change the password for the built-in Administrator account?

Unless he's just practising, he cant boot to do it.

Hardly any1 believes in 6P's='Proper planning prevents piss
poor performance' so he likely cant boot !

Assuming you have Admin Privileges: Click on Control Panel | Administrative
Tools | Local Security Policy | Local Policies | Security Options. Scroll down
the list and find the two items dealing with the Recovery Console. One is "Allow
administrative logon" and the other is "Allow floppy copy and access to all
files and folders". Enable both of these policies.

You can now access the RC without the Admin password prompt.

Hope this helps,

A minor registry edit will prevent the RC from asking you for a password.

The recovery console needs the pasword for the person who installed XP, not
for just any administrator. If the install was done by a major PC maker,
you may need to contact them for it.

However, the password is sometimes blank. So, try just pressing enter when
you are asked for a password, it may help.

Or, if you can get into XP, even safe mode, you can arrange to bypass the
password by the following registry change:

Instead, just run REGEDIT (Start à Run à Regedit)

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\Recover
yConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1

Greetings & thank you for your response.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.msc is only msc I got beginning
with "s". Strange huh!

I'm gonna use BartPE not RC for sure now.

No problem! :)

I feel it is best for everyone to make this registry change (while your
system is working)
just to prevent a roadblock of the RC when it is needed.
