recovering mail database

I've got a computer running Vista Home Premium where the Windows Mail folder
items are intact but the database has been lost. Is it possible to recover
the database given the mail folders? When I try running Windows mail without
a database, one is created but shows no messages. The version of Windows
Mail is 6.0.600.16386. Thanks

Its better to rebuild it. You can create folders in WinMail and you can
either drag the eml files overtop the folder message list and drop them, or
you can try File | Import | Messages and point to the previous message store
directories. see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm and the section on WinMail.

Thanks for the reply. I did some tests and discovered that what you said is
true - transferring the .eml files into the Local Folders causes their
messages to come up just like I want. I still can't get it to work with the
actual .eml files that I want to recover which indicates that they must be
corrupt. This is not surprising since I recovered them using a data recovery
tool. I guess my customer is out of luck. Thanks for the help.

Well, eml files are just text files, so you should be able to open them with
Notepad and check to see if they are in fact messages.
