Recovering from virus attack

In XP Pro, my computer stopped loading at the point that
the wallpaper came up but nothing else - no icons, etc.
On a tip from a friend, I ran a virus scanner and found
not one, but 4 viruses, including the Nachi and Blaster
viruses. I got rid of them, made sure my firewall was
enabled, downloaded new & installed patches from
Microsoft, but still not fixed. Do I need to re-install
XP? If so, will the upgrade install work, or do I need to
go for the full thing? Will I lose my files? Any help is
appreciated. Thanks.
