Suggestions:

System Restore works for some items.

The System Restore feature of Microsoft Windows XP enables administrators to
restore their PCs, in the event of a problem, to a previous state without
losing personal data files (such as Word documents, drawings, or e-mail).

To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, and then click Help and
Support. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Using System Restore to
undo changes, and then click Run the System Restore Wizard.

You can use System Restore to restore your computer to any restore point
while in safe mode. If you cannot start the computer in standard mode, you
can use System Restore to restore to a time when you could start the
computer without errors.

To restore to a time when your computer started without errors, select a
restore point as close to the time you remember it last started without
errors.

Not in my findings, Harry. As I stated, it depends.

Don't use System Restore or you run the risk of overwriting what you might
be able to get back with a third party undelete program. Try running this
app off a floppy http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html and if
possible connect a second drive to recover your files to.

First, STOP using the computer until you try data recovery. Deleted
files are not removed from the drive; their space is marked as available
so the less you use the drive the greater the chance of recovery.

Second, always have a current backup. Data loss does happen whether by
mistake (here) or component failure, or act of nature or theft.

Here are some file recovery options:

Executive Software “Undelete”:

Lastly there are commercial data recovery services that are very good
but very expensive -- $500 to several thousand. Depends on how
important the data is to you.

I thought that System Restore didn't monitor the My Documents directory
therefore items stored there were *safe* from SR removing them when it is
run. If that is true then SR won't help to recover any lost files that may
have been in the My Documents directory. However running it might overwrite
deleted files rending them impossible to recover even with undelete
software.

Hi Harry,

Looking back at this thread, when I stated:
Not in my findings, Harry. As I stated, it depends.

It applied to his list of what he stated was missing. As per, it depends.
