Recovering file contents

There are lots of freewares for recovering deleted files, but is there a
method of recovering data in a file that has been overwritten -- for
example a Word file that was updated and saved some time ago? But I am
not necessarily talking about Word files -- just any kind of file that
you alter then want an older version of.
