Recovering deleted items - Need urgent help - Don't we all!!

Hi There,

Really hope someone can help.

Running Exchange 2003 with Outlook 2000 & 2003 clients.

A user who normally uses Outlook2000 had to use 2003 for one day.
Today a lot of emails are missing from the inbox. The user definatly
didn't hard or soft delete these mails, however.....

If I use OWA and go to the following URL:
http://mail.domain.co.uk/exchange/username/inbox/?cmd=showdeleted
Then I can see all the emails that are missing (all with the same
deleted date), if I try to recover any they just won't do it, if I try
to recover some from a different date then they recover just fine.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what could be causing this, could they
have been archived to a PST file, if so would I be seeing them in this
list?

Thanks for any help.

That would depend on the configuration of that user with Outlook 2003 and if
you can see a pattern in what messages have been deleted. If he/she had set
his/her delivery location to a pst-file the message would be on the Outlook
2003 client computer.

It should display any message that has been deleted from the Exchange
message store that fall within the retention settings.

If a message has been archived is it displayed in the deleted recovery
folder seen from this url:
http://mail.domain.co.uk/exchange/username/inbox/?cmd=showdeleted or is
this just showing items that have been hard deleted?

Thanks

If the messages had been archived off, should the restore option work,
as the problem I'm having is that it dosn't?

Thanks again.

If they have been archived the items should still be in the pst-file on the
local Outlook 2003 client. As I said the restore option may or may not work
depending on the retention settings. This could be for instance based on
size, date or whether or not the items have been previously backed up by the
server. In the worst case you'll have to mount the backup of the Exchange
store of the day before he lost his items and do an exmerge on the mailbox
of the user to retrieve them.
