recovering deleted files

Is there any way to recover files that have been taken off
the hard drive. I had stored a bunch of excel and
miscillaneous other files on my local directory. In an
effort to clean the directory up I attempted to move those
files to a writeable c.d. With hopes of saving time I cut
an pasted the files to our office's network directory and
then from another computer (w/ a c.d. burner) attempted to
cut and paste the the files to the c.d. The c.d. process
seemed to work as expected so it was closed out. When I
went to use the c.d. the files where not there. And
needless to say because of my attempt at saving time, they
had been removed from the hard drive.

The were not on the network for any significant amount of
time 5 minutes or so, therefore they weren't saved when
the network was backed up.

Is there any hope?

Important files should be stored on the server, where they
are backed up regularly, and never on workstations.
