recovering deleted file from server

How can I recover a file that was deleted from a Windows
2000 Server w/SP4? Are there any Microsoft utilities to
do this or do I need to use a 3rd party utility? I just
want to get one file. The file was deleted by a user,
and it is not in the recycle bin.

Thanks in advance!

If the file was deleted by the user over the network, it bypasses all
recycle bins and gets "permanently" deleted. Can you restore from backup?
Other than that you would need to search for undelete tools to use.
There are third party tools to capture deletes done over the network and
allow you to restore, but they have to be in place before the file was
deleted.

I'm very curious about these capture deleted files
software. I had problems with users who delete files or
move files and I can't track them. The files from the
backup is sometimes too old to the user.
Novell OS does allow you to know who deleted the files and
recover files. However, like you said, the Microsoft OS
doesn't do it. I have tried to find a software that will
allow me to recover the deleted files, but without any
luck.

Thanks,

Hi -

The accidentally-deleted file *might* still be recoverable if it
hasn't already been overwritten by other file activity on the server.
(The chance is a bit slim, but it exists.) There are several
third-party file recovery products available, and a Google search for
"undelete" will show you several. (My personal recommendation is at
the URL below, but there are others, too.)

To prevent this from happening in the future, you can replace the
Windows Recycle Bin with something that's more robust and able to
capture deletions across the networks (as in your situation). For
this, the only product I know of is Executive Software's Undelete
(www.undelete.com)

I hope this helps -
