Recover information from wiped hard drive

I sent my lap top to PC World for repair. D drive was not recognising a disk
when I put one in. I know I should have backed everything up but I did'nt
think I would need to for that fault. When my lap top came back from PC World
(after almost 5 weeks) All the infomation on my C drive had gone and had
beenreplaced with things I did not want that were not there before. Is there
any way I can recover my lost info?

Not really.

There is a small possibility a lab could recover the data but it would cost
at least $1000

The kicker is that labs usually give you no guarantee...so it would be an
expensive gamble.

That really depends on what was done, how much money you can spend on it
(are willing to spend), how specific you can get about where things you want
were located and in the end - is doubtful anything will be recovered even if
it is the exact same hard disk drive/just overwritten.

Call "PC World" and demand to know what they have done.
Is your "D" drive a CD/DVD?

Five weeks ? - There is a chance that the drive now in the machine
is not even the same physical drive as the one you sent it. Or the
drive may have been overwritten with an image recovery. I'd have
to say chances of recovery are pretty slim.

Reputable shops should ( If they are competent ) ask if your data
is backed up.

I assume the "D" drive you're talking about is your CD drive. If so, there
is no reason your hard drive shold have been touched.

Call PC World. Your data are probably lying about the shop somewhere. If
they say they don't have your data, your line is "What are you going to do
to get it back for me? I'd hate to think you're on the hook for several
thousand dollars to a professional recovery service."

Seriously, dude, you've got to fuss like the third monkey on Noah's
gangplank. There is no excuse for them abusing you that way.

they say they don't have your data, your line is "What are you going to do
to get it back for me? I'd hate to think you're on the hook for several
