Recover contacts from corrupt pst file

I'm in a bit of a crisis. After upgrading to Vista x64, I'm attempting to
import my old .pst file into Outlook 2007. I'm told that the .pst is corrupt
and that I should run scanpst.exe to repair it. I found scanpst.exe and ran
it, and I get an error message "An error occurred which caused the scan to be
stopped. No changes have been made to the scanned file." This happens for
both my regular and backup .pst files.

I've scanned the pst files with the demo versions of commercial data
recovery products, and the data are there. But I'd rather not pay $250 to
recover my address book. This is my only copy of it, please help!

Why would you import Outlook data in the first place? Just open the file.
Don't you back up your data?

Thanks for the reply, Russ.

When I try to open the file, I'm told that it's corrupt and I need to run
scanpst.exe to repair it. The repair fails. Yes, I back up my data, but as
I explained, the backup is also corrupt, or seems to be.

How did you create and transfer this PST file?
I don't see where you explained that the backup file is also corrupt.
Explain how that happened and how you back up your data.
