recording to cd/dvd with XP

Am I right in thinking that XP has some basic recording facility built in?
In media player?

I've always used roxio software, so a bit vague on what XP will do without
it. Ive just had a look in media player and it looks as if it will for music
tracks.

I have a neighbour who is having difficulty offloading his pictures from
camera to pc then putting them on disc. Hes not pc literate and at this
point I'm only assuming XP from the age of his computer and that he actually
has some type of recordable drive. He saying he is following instructions
from someone else and getting nowhere.

I'm going to have a look tomorrow ( why me!!). So assuming he has the camera
software installed and he has got at least a cd-r can the photos be
transferred to disc without using 3-party burning software?

Thanks in advance.

Windows XP can write to CD-Rs - not DVDs.
Start button --> Help and Support --> search for:

write CD

Yes, Media Player will rip and burn music tracks to and from CDs (if that's
what you're asking).

Yes, you can do it all in Explorer. Your friend's CDR drive should be in the
"send to" folder (right-click on a picture file, and select "send to"). The
picture(s) will go into a temporary folder, waiting to be burned to the
disk.

Tell him to click start, help and support. Look at the 2nd topic down in
the left column.

Thank you both for your replies. That sets it out quite clearly so I should
be able to walk him through the procedure ( assuming he has a cdr!).

Many thanks.
