Hi,

I use this software to do that if I miss recording a show I want. It is
a simple, one-task, no frills software that works. I've used it 5 or 6
times with no problems.

On the page it says that you should have the RealPlayer installed, well
I've not got it but I do have Real Alternative installed so maybe
that's what is making it function. Whatever, it works just fine. There
are quite a few programs that will do this I think but if you want a
stand-a-lone proggy then give this a try.

In my opinion, the best software for the job.

StepVoice Recorder is a real-time recording software with MP3 file format
support. Allows recording from any sound source. By changing recording
bitrate you may vary sound quality from PHONE (3.5—7.0 Mb/hour) to CD
(3.5—7.0 Mb/3 minutes)

Thanks. I tried it and it worked. Intuitive and easy.
A question though.
You have to be playing the BBC programme - and then you press record -
and you can even set a timer to stop recording after half-an-hour -
but is there a way of recording without playing the programme?
I wondered if that might be quicker?
Maybe I haven't explained that well - what I mean is ... download the
BBC programme without actually playing it.
Does that make any sense?

I don't think that can be done, at least with this program. Is the BBC
event a live stream or a recorded event? If it is already recorded, then,
maybe you can download the the file in its original format, perhaps it is
a ".ram" (real audio" file..

BBC programmes available from Radio 4 Listen Again are recorded
and kept on the server for a week.
I haven't succeeded in downloading the ra file.
I wonder if anyone has found out how to do it?
Here's a direct link to the BBC Listen Again site in case anyone would
be so kind as to have a go:

Hi,

Have you tried Net Transport?
http://lycos26486.l97.lycos.com.cn/default.htm

I tried this and it seemed to work for me. I only grabbed the first
few minutes but that worked. I first saved the .ram file to disk then
open this in notepad to get the URL for the .ra file. That's what I
dropped that into net transport. I think it can integrate with the
browser so there might be a more automatic way to do this. Net
transport will, I think, download flat out so it should not take as
long as playing and recording.

I haven't tried that - but I did try getting the URL from the ram file -
but when I tried to download the ra file it didn't work.
Have BBC made it impossible?

I tried following their instructions but it didn't work - so probably I
did something wrong. Maybe someone can figure out what I did wrong?

I went to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml
and right-clicked on "Prisoners of Albion" link
and opened that ram file in notepad.
The file was called fr1102.ram and its contents were:
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio4/fri1102.ra?title="Friday_11am"&start="0:00"
Actually there was a funny character at the end of the string,
which hasn't shown up here.

I made a dummy html page containing that as a hyperlink
and then launched the page in IE
and right-clicked on the link
to try and save the ra file.

What did I do wrong?

I suspect you need to download the latest version of SVCR, as it works fine for me.
Streambox Vcr 1.0 beta 31smf+ (works with most servers)

All files have to be downloaded to your PC to work. Browsers don't
understand the protocol. Net transport does and it works.

use streambox vcr, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

sometimes streambox can't pick up a good url. in this case, get url
snooper. i dunno the url for it, but the the discussion group is:

http://pub25.ezboard.com/bstreemeboxvcr.

you run url snooper, then start the link. then stop snooper. it'll
have the correct link listed. right-click and you have the option to send
the link direct to
streamboxvcr.

Alternatively, break the net connection whilst playing the RAM or RA file in real player (or equiv) and copy the link that appears
in the Error box.

Slightly OT. I use "Total Recorder" - although not freeware to record BBC7
comedies. Just set-up the program, and it automatically dials-up, records,
and closes link. Records in mp3 to keep files small. Excellent for
recording "Hancock" and "Dads Army" etc to listen to at a more convenient
time...

Although this is outside of the realm of this newsgroup - I say this in the
hope that there may be a freeware version of such a program : )
