Record locking

Ron

Hi,

I have a shared database at work using Access 2000 on Windows 2000 and keep
getting record locking problems.

Each user updates the base table via a query but whenever one user is part
way through a creating a new record everyone else is locked out.

The same database doesn't exhibit this problem using Access 2003 on XP.

I have tried having the base tables on a backend database and setting
everything to 'no locks'.

Any advice appreciated.

Ron.

In the front-ends that are using Access 2000, go to Tools|Options|Advanced
tab, compare the Default Open Mode (should be shared) and Default Record
Locking (set to No Locks) against one of the Access 2003 computers that
works as desired. You may also want to check the Use Record Level Locking
checkbox.

There were also some file locking problems with the back-end file on Windows
2000. If you've applied all of the updates from Windows Update to the
Windows 2000 computers, this shouldn't be a problem. Also, make sure you've
installed all of the Office 2000 updates, especially Service Pack 3.

I would reccomend converting all your MDB to ADP and presto-chango all
your locking problems are gone!!

The database is set to shared and no locks.

I suspect that the problem might be to do with Windows/Office 2000 not being
fully updated as you suggest.

Thanks,
Ron.

I would love to, trouble is there are no sql servers at work so I'm stuck
with plain old Access 2000.

I probably wont even be able to get IT to help with updates where I need
install disks for Office (our IT don't like disturbances!).
