Reconnect Hard Drive

To avoid giggles, I won't explain how improving my backup process
resulted in the loss of both the backup and the original data drive.
But, here's where I am ...

I've "lost" on of my 4 internal drives. Using the XP disk mgmt app,
the drive is reported as "Unallocated" and doesn't show up in
Explorer. Using BOOTITNG, it is listed along with the 2 partitions it
contained!!!

I found and tried a nifty GPL utility (TestDisk @ www.cgsecurity.org)
which reports the drive as structurally ok, shows the 2 partitions,
and in fact allowed me to copy file from it to another drive. The
copied files were perfect.

So, something XP wants is not there. But what & how I get it there.

Urgh. Thet is one of the reason, that usually three independent backup
sets are regarded as the mimimum. It is very hard to loose all backups
with that.

Hmm. One thing you can try is to copy the data with an OS
that actually works, namely boot Knoppix from a CD and copy
with it. After that you can wipe and reinitialize the disk.

XP can be a bit fussy about what it wants to see with NTFS formatted partitions.

Most of the rest isnt as fussy, essentially because MS hasnt documented NTFS fully.

Have you tried CHKDSK /R on the drive?

Mike.

Try a program called Handy Recovery. Demo is available to try for
free (1 file a day, 30 days to expire) but it has worked for me when
one of my hard drive had a bad head crash that wiped the MBR and
prevented me from accessing files on the hard drive.

The weird things people make up these days.
