Reconfiguring forest on a Windows 2000 Server ?

Marc Vaccarino

Can you reconfigure a forest on a Windows 2000 Server without reinstalling
the operating system. I need to reconfigure a server so it's on the same
forest of another domain because I'm setting up a Exchange Server.

Hi Marc-

Yes, if the server in question is a member server you can change it's domain
membership with little effort. If the server in question is a DC in a
forest, then you would have to demote it 1st then change it's domain
membership. If it is the *only* DC for a forest then demoting it deletes the
forest entirely.

You could Migrate the account and then dcpromo this server down and up into
the existing forest

The forest is a boundary, but I'm not sure I'm clear on what you mean when
you say "reconfigure a forest". You can certainly move a dc (demote, remove
from domain, join new domain in new forest) or server (same except for
demotion) from one forest to another, but no machine can belong to more than
one domain at the same time be it in the same forest or not. If you have
something specific regarding Exchange in this, then you may want to also
post something in that newsgroup for them to address.
thanks
