Hi, I want to buy a laptop meeting the following criteria:

- fast (for running maths programs)
- 14 inch monitor
- sold without operating system
- can run XP Pro SP2 without problem
(I will be using XP Pro, but could someone advise on x64 vs x32? I
would like to run all my old programs that run on x32. Would there be
problems doing this on x64?)
- can run Word and Excel 2003 without problem
- lots of RAM, all available to XP
- lengthy warranty, 5 years if possible, otherwise 3 years
- decent connectivity: 4+ USB slots, multi-card, Firewire, etc.
- decent GPU, so *not* Nvidia
- decent and fast CPU, hard drive, multi-format DVD drive etc.
- good build quality, keyboard etc., not a 'budget' machine.

On the other hand I do not need to play 3D games or have a military-
spec ruggedised case etc.

Recommendations?

Thanks!

Michael

Call Dell as an example and have one built for you using your specs

Thanks Peter. But I called Dell and they won't sell one without an OS
installed.

Are there any other companies you would recommend, which can sell
to customers in the UK?

I remember a few years ago I looked at some high-spec gamer-type
machines,
but without the top-spec graphics cards or monitors. Excellent build
quality
and fast. Unfortunately most have monitors larger than 14" though.
(In the end I bought one with an Nvidia card - my mistake).

Have them build it and then remove the OS they put in. You can ask them to put XP as
the OS

Why SP2 instead of SP3?

I had problems after installing SP3. Can't remember what they were.
Uninstalled it and they went away. SP2 has always been very stable
though.
