I bought an HP Deskjet 820Cse (Professional Series) in 1996 and for the last
7 years have been happy as a pig in ink. It cost about $450 new and is one
of the best deals I've ever had in the computer field. I'm not talking about
the price I paid to Best Buy- I'm talking about the quality of work this
workhorse has produced for my small business.

It's now time to buy a new printer and my question to the group is this:
What HP printer today is the one most comparable to the 820Cse?

Thanks and Happy New Year!!!

Bill;

I've got (had) the same printer you mention. Mine has a broken paper
handling mechanism and I need to replace it.

I've been looking and so far I like the HP 1100D which is about the
same physical size of the 820Cse, uses two ink cartridges (black and
Tri-color) but also includes automatic duplexing for $199.

If you are not planning on doing photo quality output this might be
your best bet.

The 820 was a slow printer that was fairly dumb, and used the windows
printing system. I'm glad to see that someone had good luck with it, as I
did not!

What you seem to be after is a printer with a fairly heavy duty mechanism,
moderate speed, and moderate graphics quality. You want a printer that has
heads attached to the ink tank. Hp has some models that use the same heads
and cartriage as the 820. Personally, with the constant changes and newer
designs, I'd opt for a fairly inexpensive hp or canon that has reasonably
sized ink tanks.
(Back when, I returned the HP 820 and exchanged it for a canon BC620. It had
a built-in epson emulator, and would work with or without the windows
printing system.
