Extend the life of the writer which costs four times the cost of a
DVDRW.
To be honest the cost is negligible. A DVD-ROM costs virtually
nothing, and a writer costs roughly 4 times nothing. The particular
DVD-RW drive I looked at was less than £40, and it'll be comming down.
The DVD drive is also VERY unlikely to die. It'll probably last a
good few years with LOADS of heavy usage, and by that time (if they're
still around) you'll be able to get a better one for about half the
current price.
Soon something breaks, the sooner you can upgrade it ;-)
Also he nmay want to do disc to disc which is a PITA with a
single drive.
I suppose so, but I never do that. I have a DVD-ROM, and DVD-writer,
but I never do disc to disc. These days it probably isn't much of a
problem though. Having said that I did a backup of my data a few days
ago, and the disc keeps giving me CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) errors
now. It was quite fortunate that I had also backed it up onto another
machine!
