Recommend a scanner?

We are currently using an Intermec 700 series device in our factory -
however, they are expensive ($3k+). There are some places on the factory
floor where we appreciate the 3' drop ruggedness - but not everywhere is
that needed.

We need to buy another scanning device that will run our vb.net cf
application - would any of you have any recommendations for a less expensive
scanning unit? I'm not using the Intermec sdk for this app, just wedge
scanning. So the app should port to any device. The only big need is to
scan the UCC128 symbology. I'm looking for something less than $1k, if
possible - or slightly more if necessary.

I'd really appreciate any of your recommendations.

If you don't care about ruggedness much, you can get some cheap PPCs with a
CF slot and a Socket scanner

What about Symbol PPT2800 or 8800? It might also be an idea to get any
SDIO enabled device and equipp it with Socket Scan's SDIO In-Hand Scan
card.

Symbols PPT2800 will be discontinued. The PPT8800 is a great device, though
I haven't used the scanner extensively.

Hi Mike!!!

I suggest you reconsider about keeping your handheld devices. In my
experience, I have found that the Intermec 700 series are one of the best
solutions in an industrial environment.

Talk with your Intermec sales representative (don't contact resellers)
in order to find out the best configuration for your 700 handhelds. Depending
on the hardware features that you want, the price should go down. That is,
don't buy the bluetooth adapter or the wireless adapter unless you need them,
and see if a B/W screen will do instead of a colour one.

Hope it helps!!!

I would recommend the Symbol PPT8800, it is very rugged and the scanner and
SDK are great.
if you plan on using it more then 6 hours before the next charge I recommend
the extended battery or a second battery.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Alex, I've thought about an inexpensive pda usign a scanner. However, this
being a batch application (not wireless) - would I still be able to use the
SDcard to store my data? Actually, the question is, where does the scanner
plug in to? This sounds like a good, viable option.
