Recognising a wriable DVD???

I am new to trying to write a DVD on my laptop, and was wondering if anyone
could help with the following problem.
Whenever I put a blank DVD into the drive (it is a DVD R/RW drive!) My PC
does not recognise it as having any space. This happens regardless of wether
I am attempting to just drop files directly into the window, or if I am
trying to put movies onto a DVD through transfer software.
Any ideas? I have tried with lots of blank DVD's and none are recognised as
having space - it always shows as 0 bytes available.
