Updates on January 7th have changed the way that "Standby" works in that the
computer no longer closes down to a level when fans are switched off and,
futhermore when re-starting from Standby some programs (printing, for example)
do not open properly until a complete re-boot.

This is not a problem confined to my computer as I have tried it on two
other computers following the recent Microsoft updates

My question is why has Microsoft done this?

Ask Microsoft?
This is a peer-to-peer newsgroup - and remember - you tested three systems.
I am pretty sure there are more possibilities than three configurations (How
identical are these configurations? Have you verified the hardware
manufacturer does not have newer hardware drivers?)

Hi,

I recently had this problem in Vista and it could be the same thing in XP
too. Try looking at your power saving options (in XP they're on the
screensaver panel) and see if an option similar to "Allow computer to go
into hybrid sleep" (or something like that) has been unchecked.

Hope this helps

Andy
