recent file list

Under TOOLS, options, general etc. the Most recent file list entry is greyed
out. Cannot change it.
I don't think it has always been like this. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Windows 2000, office pro 2003, etrust antivirus, spybot, no firewall, aol
dialup, dell laptop, office sp-1
