Recent Documents Setting Disappeared

The Recent Documents setting in Start > Properties > Customize > Advanced is
gone.

How do I get it back?

Thank you.

I don't think so.

It's only affecting one user.

You probably have a group policy set on this feature.

Why don't you look? It is the only explanation. It is bleedingly obvious. Many tweak programs write this to the group policy section of the registry too.

NoRecentDocsMenu
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Data typeRangeDefault value
REG_DWORD 0 | 1 0

Description
Removes the Documents menu from the Start menu.
The Documents menu contains links to the non-program files that users have most recently opened. It appears so that users can easily reopen the documents.
This entry stores the setting of the Remove Documents menu from Start Menu Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the Remove Documents menu from Start Menu policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry and the system behaves as though the value is 0.
ValueMeaning
0 (or not in registry)The policy is disabled or not configured. The Documents menu appears on the Start menu.
1The policy is enabled. The Documents menu is removed from the Start menu.

You can use the Remove Documents menu from Start Menu policy, in coordination with the Do not keep history of recently opened documents policy (NoRecentDocsHistory) and Clear history of recently opened documents policy (ClearRecentDocsOnExit) to customize access to recently opened files.
Change method
To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Remove Documents menu from Start Menu policy (User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Start Menu & Taskbar).
Tip
For detailed information about particular Group Policy settings, see the Group Policy Reference (Gp.chm) on the Windows 2000 Resource Kit companion CD.
For general information about Group Policy, see Group Policy in Windows 2000 Help.

The Registry setting for this one user read as follows:

NoRecentDocsMenu REG_BINARY 01 00 00 00

I deleted it from the Registry and fixed the problem.

Thanks.

The Mystery is how it ever got set that way in the First Place.

I didn't set it and no one else could have.

Where does one set it in Windows XP without going to the Registry itself?

Yes, I do have Tweak UI installed.

But I've not used it to tweak this setting -- in fact I don't see such a
setting in Tweak UI.

Does it just start changing things on its own?

Thanks.

If it doesn't come back by itself, indicating group policy, then no where.
Perhaps you have tweakui installed.

Right!

Thanks, I had found it.

I very much appreciate your help on this sticky wicket.

Cheers,

Look on the Explorer page not start menu page.
