Recent ATI update causes crash

I recently (a few days ago) did an anytime upgrade from Premium to Ultimate.
I have been running Home Premium without problems since January 30 this
year.
I recently had to reinstall my Vista Ultimate as this new (few days old)
install would no longer boot. I also couldn't fix it with any of the
supplied tools/methods.
I did a fresh install, then used the transfer wizard to restore files and
settings from my original 10 month old install which was still on my hard
drive and bootable.
I installed DreamScene and it worked.
I did an "ATI Technologies Inc. - Video - RADEON 9600 SERIES" update, an
Optional update, released in June, 2007 and all seemed well.
But I tried DreamScene again, and I got a black background screen.
When shutting down the computer, I would get a crash, a blue screen.

I installed the latest Catalyst ver. 7.11 drivers and all is well again.

I belief the optional update I mention above was also installed in the
failed version that I mention above.
I think my system became unstable after that and hence files got corrupted.

Try doing a driver roll back then and avoid using that device driver, its
better you download drivers through the actual manufacturers website such as
AMD ATI, there have been reports that certain device drivers coming Windows
Update tend to cause stability issues.

Noticed you installed 7-11. ATI just released 7-12 version - things I have
read on 7-12 indicates it primarily improves performance.
