receiving emails

In recent weeks 'send /receive' has become very slow.This was just annoying
but now we have the problem of constant requests for user name and
password.This is happening on my Vista and my husbands XP both using Outlook
2003.Our ISP is Orange.We have taken my husbands XP 'back to box' to solve
another problem succesfully but it hasn't solved this one.I have reloaded
Office 2003,tried several of the suggested fixes on this site and Microsoft
but no solution found.
We use Norton Security but have done for over a year.Why should this
suddenly become a problem? We also use a Linksys router.Could this be a
problem?
Have spent far too much time trying to sort this and it's driving me crazy!
