Rebuild RAID Mirror

B

- Butch

I originally setup my computer with an exact pair of hard drives as a RAID
Mirror. One day (several weeks ago) I lost the mirror for some reason.
Among the things I played with was to move the wires from (I guess, I
forgot) one controller to another. Now they may not be on the same pair, if
that is important. I see that they are both identified as Drive 0, with one
on the Primary ATA Channel and the other on the Secondary ATA Channel.
Somehow the second drive established itself as the E: Drive and has been
working well, as I use it for occasional storage, so the drive is healthy.
Now I want to put it back as a mirror of the C: Drive.

In the Disk Management window I set it as a Dynamic Drive but it is listed
as a Simple Drive. I purged all the data from it so it should be empty. I
deleted the Volume and it now is listed as New Volume and has no drive
letter. According to the Help Windows I should be able to click on Add
Mirror, but the option is not available to me.

What have I not done, or done wrong?

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance, Butch

That is very important, return the drive connections to where they were (you
should never move them once an array is established), go into the RAID
controller BIOS and rebuild the array.

I "beleieve" that when you use a "Dynamic" type hard drive setting,
this would mean that your are using "software RAID.) Software RAID
does not use any type of dedicated hardware controller.

I have 4 connect points on the nVIDIA nForce4 Ultra motherboard. The
drives are now connected, and both drives are listed as being on the Primary
ATA channels. The up-to-date system drive is Disk 0, Location 0. The empty
drive is Disk 1, Location 0. The up-to-date system drive is identified as a
Basic drive, with the empty drive as a Dynamic drive. I think the Help
pages say that both drives need to be Dynamic before I can get the menu
choices to create a mirror. If that is correct, then I must convert the
up-to-date system drive to Dynamic. BIG QUESTION - Will this conversion
have an adverse affect on the system or data files on the drive? Does the
empty drive need to be reformatted in any way?
