Rebooting

Lately I am experiencing a problem that at first I thought was related to
jumper settings on my HDDs, but that is not the solution so far.
Say I install a program and it says now you need to reboot for the settings
to go into effect. When it attempts to reboot it fails to recognize my two
HDDs and then I have to power off and then power on to restart my system.
HELP!!!!!! What kind of a problem is this??
Thanks in advance!

Check under device manager (Right click "My Computer > Properties > Hardware
(tab) > Device Manager) expand Disk Drives > right click your hard disk and
Properties, look to see if they are functioning properly.

Restart in Safe Mode, do a disk clean up and defrag > restart in safe mode
and try again.

i think there is a bug with sp2 because that happens to
me too but all i ever do is just restart the computer and
then it shows

OK no luck so far. Here's what it says when the screen is in MS-DOS mode:
PRIMARY DRIVE 0 NOT FOUND
PRIMARY DRIVE 1 NOT FOUND
I even updated my BIOS from Dell and that didn't help either.
HELP!

Oh noooooooooooooo
I had attempted to install it, then got rid of it since I was having
problems with it. Does this mean I have to reinstall the &*(%CXX OS????????

There could be a few reasons for your problems:

1. Dells use the cable select jumper settings for hard drives. Some
Dells are extremely fussy about this and will not recognize drives if
they are not jumpered cable select. So check this first.

2. If your drives are correctly jumpered and are not seen in the BIOS,
then you have a hardware failure. If neither drive is shown, then the
failure is probably on the motherboard's drive connector. Updating a
BIOS cannot fix a broken motherboard.

If #2 applies to you and the machine is still under warranty, call Dell
for repair/replacement.

OK, I doubt it as a hardware failure in as much as that after I power off,
it then recognizes them.
I think I'll have to try the cable select idea, since the HDD in there
that's in 0 position is my WD which was my ghost.
This WD does not offer cable select and my Seagate which is my new ghost
does offer Cable Select. So I will try this idea. I thought it might be a
jumper setting.
Thanks for the suggesiton and will let you know what happened!

How old is that Western Digital drive? All the ones I've seen do offer
cable select. You can go to Western Digital's tech support site and
look up your drive model for jumpering configurations.

The problem is not settled yet.
I attempted to use my other seagate I ghost, which offers Cable Select and
the same problem was occurring. In fact it didn't even allow me to get into
the OS at all. Whereas I just re-installed the WD and it has worked fine.
However I have not tested it in reboot mode to see if this error pops up
again.
I will not need to see if this WD offers a Cable Select setting, since the
diagram does not offer me a Cable Select setting.
I am getting nervous though and beginning to think that the MB is the
culprit. To think I bought this stupid machine in January and it's giving me
trouble so soon!
