I was away for six weeks when I came back I did Windows update and my
computer just keeps on rebooting. Why???? How can I prevent this when I do
a windows update. Please note, I ran a virus scan, etc. in safe mode --
nothing.

Try installing xp cd,boot to xp cd,recovery, press enter key for password,
select 1 For hd C: In recovery type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru (15-20 min),
type:EXIT Let xp start up,remove cd.

I don't want to lose what I have in the computer, that's why I ws afraid to
put in the recovery disk
However, that does not explain why it happened and how to prevent it.

Windows update interaction with something you have loaded caused it.
Since you CAN run in safe mode, try Uninstall the new updates one at a
time till it works in normal. the last one you uninstall will be the one
to check out.

I deleted the updates from March on. No luck. Same problem.

any other suggestions??????

You didn't happen to install a driver update did you? If you did, do a
roll back in Device Manager.

Event Viewer, System log should show it.

Start, Run, eventvwr.msc to fire it up.
